By Wayne Lamb
A very wet Saturday morning saw the start of a great weekend’s racing. Things got going with the Sprint Plus Distance consisting of an 800m swim, 46k bike and 8k run. Both Wayne Lamb and Fraser Murray tackled this very hilly distance both posting PBs throughout, Wayne with a 4min PB on the swim, 1 min on the bike and 4 min on the run and Fraser with a 3 min overall PB. Wayne finished 16th overall and 11th in age with a time of 2hr 33min. Fraser finished and 32nd in age.
The next distance to start was the Super Sprint with a 400m swim, 23k bike and 4k run. In this distance we had James Adamson, Lee-J Watson, Paul Adamson, Zara Bailey and Debs Clarke. Some fantastic racing from all involved on a very challenging course. Lee-J finished 4th in a time of 1hr 7min, James was 3th overall and 10th in age with a time of 1hr 15, Paul came in 20th overall and 5th in age in 1hr 18, Zara finished 81st and 10 in age in 1hr 33 and Debs cam in 207th and 27th in age in 1hr 49.
The last race of the morning was the starter sprint a 200m swim, 13k bike and 2k run which had 2 of our athletes competing. Ironman Nathan Ames and Paul Bailey. Nathan only went and won the whole event in 43mins, a clear 7 minutes faster than 2nd place and a week after a full Ironman. Paul came in 12th and 1st in age.
During the morning the weather was hotting up along with the competition. The afternoon saw the return of the mixed relays in which each person in a team of 4 does a mini triathlon of 250m swim, 5k bike and 1.5k run before handing over to the next member. NTC entered 2 teams. Team 1 – Catherine Swinnerton, Lee-J Watson, Zara Bailey and Paul Adamson. Team 2 – Laura Ames, James Adamson, Kirsty Lamb and Pete Swinnerton. The racing was fast and furious but NTC 1 came out on top and finished 7th of 24 teams in 2hr 18mins. NTC 2 came in 11th in 2hrs 32
After watching Nathan take his first podium, we retired to the campsite for a much deserved drink and a great team BBQ.
Sunday was a more gentle start as our rising star juniors were not racing until the afternoon which gave us time to watch the standard and half iron distance races. Most of the NTC racing crew made it back to watch our budding superstars which showed a great team spirit.
The first junior to go was Lucy Donnelly racing in the 11-12 age group (200m swim, 4k bike and 1.6k run). Lucy had a great race on a very tough course and finished 7th in a very strong field of older children. Patience Lamb was the last of the NTC team to race in the 8-10 age group (100m swim, 4k bike and 1.3k run)
Patience exited the water first on her way to finishing in 4th, only 17 seconds behind a podium and posted a 5min PB from the same race last year.
NTC were mentioned by the commentator on both days for our constant presence at the Castle Series races and our great support for each other.
All in all a great weekend of racing, next stop Chantilly!!
