Report by Wayne Lamb
Patience Lamb and Nathan Walker both qualified for a place in the Inter-Regional Championships at Eton Dorney at the weekend.
The competition saw the top 3 boys and girls from both TS2 and TS3 go through to race in the Inter-Regional Championships against all national regions at Mallory Park, Leicestershire on 15/16 September.
It was 28 degrees at 9am at the Olympic venue near Slough and the weather played a massive factor with both Eammon Clowes in TS3 Boys and Lucy Donnelly in TS2 Girls narrowly missing out on a place.
Eton Dorney is beautiful place, the kids loved it.
Before racing the juniors got to watch the elite race which was important as this was Nathan and Patience’s first draft legal race.
The Super Series went first, with a nasty crash and a few casualties. NTC’s Eden Schiller came out unscathed, she was her normal amazing self – finishing 3rd overall.
By lunch time when Nathan, Lucy, Eammon and Patience raced it was hitting over 30.
Nathan and Lucy had great swims both leaving the water in the front group. Nathan had a hard bike but pulled back the places with a blistering run, and finished 1st in the West Midlands boys.
Lucy had a good bike but a kick in the water meant the run was going to be hard work, although she did brilliantly to battle through.
Patience exited the water in her normal place towards the back of the pack and as always spent the race chasing.
Chase she did and worked herself into 3rd and a qualifying position.
Eammon had a good swim and run in a hard age group, he did fantastically well, showing real determination.
Lucy and Eammon finished agonisingly close to qualifying in 5th.
It was a brilliant event and an amazing experience for all the juniors to race with some of the best kids in the British Isles.
Nathan and Patience will both now get a West Midlands Tri Suit ready for the race and will meet up for five team training sessions before the championships.
The Inter-Regional Championships are a once yearly event held as part of the British Triathlon Under 20’s Festival. They are an opportunity for some of the best girls and boys across both the TriStar 2 and 3 age groups in each of the 10 English Regions, Scotland, Wales and Jersey to race against each other.
All athletes score points for their team based upon their finishing position. Points are totalled for each team with the lowest two scores discarded.
The team with the highest score is crowned the Inter-Regional Champions.
With the advent of Mixed Team Relay at the Olympics British Triathlon believes it is very important for young athletes to be exposed to and experience the format.
We hope that more NTC Juniors will take part next year to fight for a place in the team.
